Our Story

Stage I Dance Academy was founded in 1962 by Beverly Smithey, who began teaching dance at just 15 years old in her parents' basement. What started as a small neighborhood studio quickly grew into a thriving dance family.

After marrying her husband, Bill, the studio moved to the basement of their home before eventually relocating to a building on State Road 135 in Greenwood, where it remained for 35 years. In 2013, Stage I moved into its current home, allowing even more dancers and families to become part of our story.

Today, while much has changed over the decades, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to creating a place where children feel valued, challenged, and inspired.

Excellence with Heart

Our faculty is made up of experienced educators and professionals who are passionate about both dance and children. Our team includes current dance professionals, Stage I alumni, retired professional dancers, college professors, and specialists from a variety of movement backgrounds.

Just as importantly, our front desk is staffed by current and former Stage I dance parents who understand what it's like to be on the other side of the desk. From the moment you walk through our doors, you'll be greeted by people who genuinely care about your family.

That's why we are intentional about every detail—from our age-appropriate choreography and costuming to the music we use in class and performances. You'll never find costumes that compromise a child's innocence, and our music is carefully selected to reflect the positive, family-friendly environment we've worked hard to create.

Our goal is for every dancer to feel confident, respected, and celebrated while giving parents complete peace of mind.
